ENVIRONMENTAL MONITORING

Monitoring programs have become an important part of the Adaptive Environmental Management loop and land development projects, in particular as various review agencies establish performance standards or other criteria during the approval process. By implementing monitoring programs, it is possible to confirm design parameters, understand potential environmental effect and propose appropriate mitigatory measures in an efficient and cost effective manner. Once the development is complete, monitoring programs are used to optimize operational and maintenance routines, as well as to identify design inefficiencies. Field monitoring results are combined with laboratory testing and computer simulations, and they together provide an important tool in the decision-making process during almost every design phase.

PEIL has conducted monitoring studies for various municipal, land development and aggregate industry clients. The projects included watershed and subwatershed studies, pre-construction and post-development monitoring, pit and quarry monitoring and Class Environmental Assessment projects. Our extensive knowledge of local hydrology, hydrogeology and natural resources enables our team to customize monitoring programs based on individual needs. Such programs have been proven successful in addressing issues identified by developers or municipalities.

Our staff possess hand-on experience with planning, implementation and evaluation of monitoring programs. A detailed monitoring protocol for each program typically includes selection of monitoring locations, monitoring methodology, type and frequency of data to be collected and reporting formats. Programs may include requirements for continuous or spot measurements of rainfall, level, flow rates, temperature, and flow or time proportional water quality sampling. Our expertise also covers programming and deployment of various automatic monitoring equipment, data interpretation and generation and preparation of technical reports.
